Stop These 5 Habits When Brushing Your Teeth

smiling woman brushes teeth

Brushing our teeth is a part of our daily routine, a ritual we’ve been performing since childhood. However, despite the countless times we’ve done it, many of us unknowingly retain some bad habits that could be compromising our oral health. Riverwood Dental is here to highlight these common missteps and guide you towards a healthier dental routine.

#1 Brushing Too Hard

Believe it or not, there’s such a thing as brushing too aggressively. Using too much force or a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down the enamel, leading to sensitivity and even receding gums. Instead, opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle circular motions to effectively clean your teeth without causing harm.

#2 Not Brushing Long Enough

While it might feel like you’re spending ample time brushing, anything less than two minutes might not be sufficient. Cutting your brushing time short can leave behind bacteria and plaque. To ensure you’re giving your teeth the attention they deserve, consider using a timer or listening to a short song while brushing.

#3 Using an Old Toothbrush

Toothbrushes aren’t forever. Over time, bristles become frayed and lose their effectiveness. Additionally, older brushes can harbor harmful bacteria. Dental professionals recommend changing your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, if using an electric model) every 3-4 months.

#4 Skipping the Inner and Chewing Surfaces

Often, people tend to focus on the front surfaces of the teeth since those are most visible. However, neglecting the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces can lead to cavities and plaque buildup. Ensure a comprehensive clean by reaching every nook and cranny.

#5 Immediate Brushing After Eating

It might sound counterintuitive, but brushing right after consuming acidic foods and beverages can do more harm than good. The acid weakens tooth enamel, and brushing immediately afterward can erode it. Instead, wait about 30 minutes after eating to brush, or rinse your mouth with water if you feel the need to clean it immediately.

The staff is considerate of your time and work to get you in/out quickly without feeling rushed. The office is clean & comfortable with the view looking out from the 21st floor being so much better than looking at an office wall. The dental services are performed with great care and both Docs are personable and communicate very well.

Brittany was very friendly and helpful today during my visit. I broke my jaw a while back and she was careful to not hurt me while doing xrays. Doctor Brady was very friendly as well, and went out of his way to give me some advice for healing my jaw. I was able to schedule my required follow up the very next day. Great experience!

I had such a great experience at this dental office! From start to finish, the entire team made me feel comfortable and well taken care of. Brittany, the dental assistant, was so kind and reassuring. She explained everything as we went along and really helped ease my nerves. Dr. Alvarez was amazing—professional, gentle, and very thorough. He took the time to answer my questions and made sure I understood my treatment options without ever feeling rushed. Kylie, the dental hygienist, did an excellent job with my cleaning. She was gentle but detailed, and my teeth have never felt better. She also gave me helpful tips on how to take better care of my teeth at home. Overall, this is one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had. I truly appreciate Brittany, Dr. Alvarez, and Kylie for their care and would highly recommend this office to anyone looking for a great dental team!
